Requena water and wine festival

The small town of Requena is situated within short trip from the city of Valencia in Spain and is a wonderful destination for one day trips. The place could be reached with a train, where the journey lasts for 1.30h and the cost of the ticket is below 5 Euros per person. Requena is a lovely old town, but its main attraction is the locally produced wine and especially the red wine Utiel Requena, which is its specialty. The town draws the greatest attention of the tourists during the time of its annual water and wine festival, which happens to be organized for ten days, from the 23rd August until 3rd September. Requena water and wine festival is a kind of a big event and a major festival, during which the locals celebrate the beginning of the grape harvest. It is known with the Noche de Zurra, when people go through the town, asking God to send them a lot of rain for the next grape harvest. These people get actually doused in water by people standing in the balconies above. During the Requena water and wine festival, tourists can taste the local wine from the first pressing and can also take from the offerings of flowers and fresh fruits that are presented.

During the Requena water and wine festival, the local bands play and one can just ask for some wine, since there are trucks offering free red wine. There is one tip though – everyone should bring a cup or a bottle, since they do not provide any of these. When the procession goes around the town and the people are being soaked with water from their neighbors standing on the balconies, if you want to stay dry, better stand under the balconies and just keep on chanting “aqua”, since this is part of the festival as well. Fireworks are also part of the festival and so are the bull ring performances at the small bull ring that the town has. In case you have time and do not need to run back to Valencia so fast, it is a good idea to visit that bull ring as well. The atmosphere there is very joyful, the music is loud and everyone is waiting to see the bulls and their performance. The locals led the bull out and many young men are running around. The bulls are not injured, but some of the people down chasing the bull, usually are. The bulls that are presented are usually ten.

The thing that one will like most here is that actually the entire town takes part in the event, in the special Requena water and wine festival and in the bulls’ presentations and fights. And the other good thing is that everybody enjoys the event which is the aim of the game, after all.
